We love gardening!
We are lucky to have two planting beds all to ourselves. Here we are taking care of our fruit and vegetable plot. We have planted peas, lettuce, onions, carrots, strawberry plants and raspberry plants. We check on them every day.. Plants are part of the biodiversity in our community and we are happy to report that they are all growing well.
This week we noticed that our strawberry plants have flowers. We saw a bumblebee flying around them. It made a loud buzzing sound. We LOVE bumblebees! They pollinate plants and help our fruit and vegetables to grow. We are really happy that the bumblebees have arrived to help us.

Wonderful wildflowers!
We had great fun planting our wildflower seeds. Ms. de Barra dug the soil and turned it so that it was ready for us to start planting.
We each got two handfuls of seeds and sprinkled them onto our garden. Next we took turns covering the seeds over with a gardening fork. Finally we took turns watering the seeds so that they grow big and strong. We can't wait to have a beautiful wildflower garden right outside our classroom. We want to see lots of butterflies and bees in our garden, In fact, we've spotted some already. We love flowers, plants, insects and birds. We love BIODIVERSITY!

What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the word we use to describe the different types of living things found on Earth. Some of these living things are plants, birds, insects, mammals and fish. People depend on biodiversity for food.
People sometimes damage biodiversity by cutting down trees, polluting and using bad pesticides on plants. This can kill birds, insects and mammals. We need to protect our local biodiversity by taking care of the environment and the creatures in it.

Insect pollination
Insects such as bees, wasps and butterflies are really important for pollination. Pollination is when the pollen from one flower is brought to another flower so that seeds and fruit can grow. If there were no bees, birds or butterflies pollination would not happen. That means we wouldn't have much fruit, vegetables or nuts. Did you know that bumblebees are one of the best pollinators of all? We want the bumble to visit our school garden so that our fruit and vegetables grow. Listen to the song below to learn about pollination.
